I had planned for a while to meet with a new acquaintance in Cape Town, Lizalise Mngcele to exchange ideas on innovation and career growth. Rather than go for a typical lunch meeting, I proposed a sunset hike up one of Cape Town’s scenic mountains. Lizalise liked the idea, so on a late afternoon when our calendars aligned, we started our unconventional networking expedition at the trailhead of Lion’s Head. As we set forth, Lizalise, a seasoned hiker of the route, suggested picking up pace so that we could descend before dark.
Picture me, not the youngest of hikers, gasping for breath up the ladders while quizzing Lizalise on Artificial Intelligence, start-ups, and the future of work.
Upon reaching the summit, we captured the classic silhouette shots, marveled at the beauty of Cape Town, and then descended faster than we had climbed as we synthesized ideas on innovation. By the time we returned to the base, we had forged the foundation for potential collaborations. So, we parted ways with a shared commitment to continue our career dialogue.
This impromptu business hike convinced me that I should organize more of them. If you also want to do one of your own with a potential collaborator, here are some tips.
You will need:
Proper hiking shoes: Opt for ankle-high hiking boots to shield your feet as you jump over rocks while passionately explaining your business strategy.
Good health and fitness: If you have to be carried off the mountain, I doubt if your marketing plan will make much of an impression.
Great ideas: There is no point in ascending and descending a mountain with lackluster concepts. Use the climb to get your business ideas to new heights and descend with trailblazing solutions.
I hope I have convinced you to consider a business hike for your next professional engagement. Do remember to prepare well in advance, and perhaps consult your doctor for good measure, especially if you want to do a high-altitude hike.
For a truly transformative business experience, I am thinking of doing a one-day dash to Point Lenana on Mount Kenya with a potential business partner. We would have to hike for about 16 hours over 28 km with a total elevation gain of about 2000m. The rapid ascent in altitude, awe-inspiring views, and the attempt to summit Point Lenana in just one day will surely spark groundbreaking ideas.
I will let you know how it goes!
