Amollo’s Triumph

One year ago today, on January 14th, 2024, my life changed forever. I lost sight in my left eye in a near-fatal car accident. Since then, I have lived what feels like many lifetimes. I’ve learned to live with a permanent disability, grown my consultancy, undergone several surgeries, and found the courage to keep moving forward.

As I reflect on this anniversary, my heart overflows with gratitude. The challenges of 2024 have refined me, not defined me. Here’s what I’ve learned in this transformative chapter of my life:

Courage is a daily practice

Each morning, I remind myself that I only need just enough courage to get through the day. This simple mantra keeps me grounded and focused on the present. Tomorrow, with all its uncertainties, will take care of itself.

Gratitude is a sacred ritual

At the end of each day, I pause to reflect and give thanks. Gratitude is not just an act but a state of being that reminds me of the richness of life, even in the face of adversity. I am grateful for my breath and my small contributions to a better world.

Disability does not confine me

Living with one eye has not diminished my ability to make an impact. In 2024, and into 2025, I have been privileged to collaborate with incredible partners from Open Cities Lab, the Van Leer Foundation, UrbanBetter, the African Cities Research Consortium, NextAfrica, and Riziki Source. Their trust in me boosts my confidence and passion to make a difference.

My weakness is my strength

In moments of weakness, I discovered love in its purest form. Leaning on family, friends, and colleagues transformed my vulnerability into strength. They remind me that love is most visible when we allow others to walk with us through life’s hardest moments.

2024 was not easy but it was filled with growth, love, and purpose. If there’s one thing I hope to share, it’s this: tragedy doesn’t have to be the end of your story—it can be the beginning of a new chapter.
