Life can be unpredictable, a fact that hit me square in the face – literally. On the 15th of January 2024, my world changed in the blink of an eye. But here's the twist; I emerged from the car crash not weaker, but with a newfound strength that I describe as titanium. Physically, I am titanium, well, that’s how I see it after having the left side of my face and left arm partly reconstructed with titanium. So, SIA lyrics, "I am titanium," mean so much more to me, as I confidently sing out loud “I’m bulletproof!”
If you've been following my journey on the Amollo.com WhatsApp channel, you already know the harrowing details of my injuries after our Uber ride was knocked by another vehicle. I believe that Lucy, my dear friend who was with me in the Uber, was spared so that she could very ably get me to emergency care and find my next of kin.
In the aftermath of the car crash that left me with the loss of my left eye, I found myself surrounded by an outpouring of love and support at my bedside. It could be easy to focus on the loss, but what resonates louder is the overwhelming love that I have received over these last two weeks. Just as I had resolved earlier in the year to be closer to family and friends, this crash accelerated my reconnection with loved ones, who have become my pillars of strength, reminding me of the importance of human relationships and the fragility of life. With my right eye, I now see my purpose more clearly than ever – to spread this love and joy to everyone around me.
In the spirit of spreading that love, I am re-igniting the fundraising campaign for the Mathare Community Libraries. Currently, at 24% of our $10,000 goal, let's push ourselves to reach 50% by the end of this week people! Remember, the money raised will significantly impact the educational and social development of children in an underserved community of Nairobi.
I commit to paying a year’s school fees for two library kids on my 44th birthday, which will be exactly one month after the crash. My birthday is not just about celebrating my life but extending that celebration to empower minds and ignite dreams in the hearts of children in Mathare. Help me do that.
